PART 2
Radars have come a long way in recent years, offering boaters a slew of features and functions that take much of the mystery out of interpreting data displayed on the screen while providing sharper separation between targets and other useful benefits. If you’re looking for the best radar to suit your needs, read on.
Whether you’re outfitting a new boat or refitting an existing vessel, selecting the right electronics can make your head spin because of the dizzying variety of brands and models, each touted as the one to buy. We’re here to help you narrow down the choices.
Every year at Marine Electronics Journal, we ask manufacturers to name the one model or series of electronics that they consider their best based on factors such as innovation, popularity or utility, or maybe it has proved itself over time. There are 20 product categories in all, from AIS to wireless devices. We call the results the Best & Brightest Boating Electronics.
For the next several weeks The Mic will report on the winners. Last week we rolled out the first round of the best marine radars. This time, we’ll tell you about a few other innovative radars and two radar/antenna mounts.
The Koden MDC-5200 Series Radar from SI-TEX Marine Electronics delivers professional-grade performance for a wide range of vessels. With output power ranging from 4kW to 25kW and maximum range scales up to 96 nautical miles, the MDC-5200 is built for professional operators in challenging conditions. Professional features include built-in AIS (Automatic Identification System) interface for displaying up to 1,000 targets, built-in ARPA (Automatic Radar Plotting Aid) tracking of up to 100 targets, comprehensive ship’s data display and C-Map chart overlay (with optional SD card). Koden’s Clear Image feature provides high-speed sampling in the short range for precise target acquisition and tracking, while Auto Gain and Auto STC settings allow for easy operation. The 12.1-inch high-resolution XGA display with anti-reflective coating provides clear viewing in any environment on open or enclosed helms.
Ideal for coastal bay and fishing boats, HALO20+ radar is a compact dome antenna that delivers high-quality short-, mid- and long-range detection. The HALO20+ performs a full 360° sweep every second because of its unique 60 RPM rotation at distances of up to 1.5 nautical miles. These ultra-fast updates give boaters an almost real-time view at close range, the best view for collision avoidance of fast-moving targets. Boaters can monitor two distances at once in Dual Range mode, which lets them keep an eye on far-away weather cells while looking for closer collision hazards. Lowrance’s HALO20+ pulse compression technology means no compromises in detection at either range, and beam sharpening provides improved separation between small or distant targets.
The KRA-1009_N is a cutting-edge product that boasts a range of advanced features. It utilizes digital radar target technology, enabling precise and reliable target detection. It shares a common protocol with all Onwa magnetron pulse radar antennas, ensuring compatibility and ease of integration. The built-in sea and rain clutter algorithm effectively filters out unwanted interference, enhancing radar performance. With fully digital signal processing, it delivers exceptional signal quality and clarity. The high-performance microwave front end further enhances radar sensitivity and accuracy. The KRA-1009_N offers flexible connectivity options, allowing direct connection to a PC or through a home router. It is compatible with the DigiNav application software, providing comprehensive radar control and navigation capabilities.
The T-941 Dual-Range Radar from SI-TEX offers many professional-grade features, including Hyper-Digital Processing and Dual-Range Display to provide boaters with precise detail of land features, other vessels, squalls and more. In dual-range mode, the split-screen display shows short- and long-range targets simultaneously. With its 25-inch radome antenna, 4kW output power and 36 nautical mile range, the T-941 is an ideal radar for a wide range of power, sail and fishing vessels. Advanced radar features include Warning Zone, Head Up/North Up/Course Up and True Motion Display. The T-941 also features a standard AIS interface module capable of tracking 100 targets (with connected AIS device) and Optional Automatic Tracking Aid and AIS interface when supplied with bearing, speed and lat/lon data.
Scanstrut’s new PTM-R1-SL is their top Starlink high-performance radar mount, standing 820mm (32.30 inches) high and crafted from premium marine-grade aluminum. Specifically tailored for Starlink's Flat High-Performance Model, this revamped version of our classic Tapered Mast mount guarantees easy installation and a sturdy, visually appealing design adaptable to various technologies. Compatible with Raymarine, Garmin, Simrad and Lowrance radar systems, it seamlessly integrates radar, thermal camera, aerials, and Starlink high-performance components into one cohesive setup. Boasting a durable marine paint finish and watertight construction, it simplifies wiring with access panels and pre-drilled mounting holes. There’s no need for cutting radar plugs or marine sealant. Plus, enhanced access panels and NMEA connector compatibility streamline cable routing and accommodate multiple accessories for a seamless marine electronics setup.
Seaview’s SRM200W mount for the Gen 3 Standard Starlink (sometimes Gen 4 Standard) antenna is a reliable and adaptable mounting solution that has been designed for the harsh marine environment—or any other outdoor application such as RVs, overland vehicle, vans, jeeps, side by sides, UTVs, trucks, etc.). The base aluminum plate has a three-part polyurethane prime and powder coat, and the end pieces are made using machined marine-grade high-density polyethylene to ensure top-quality finish and corrosion resistance. The Gen 3 Standard Starlink Antenna features a convenient pressure-fit kickstand for placement on flat non-mobile surfaces. However, for marine or vehicle mounting, it necessitates additional support. The SRM200W pictured is shown with the SVSLWB wedge base.
