Part 2

Whether you’re outfitting a new boat or refitting an existing vessel, selecting the right electronics can make your head spin because of the dizzying variety of brands and models, each touted as the one to buy. We’re here to help you narrow down the choices.

Every year at Marine Electronics Journal, we ask manufacturers to name the one model or series of electronics that they consider their best based on factors such as innovation, popularity or utility, or maybe it has proved itself over time. There are 20 product categories in all, from AIS to wireless devices. We call the results the Best & Brightest Boating Electronics.

For the next several weeks The Mic will continue to report on the winners. Last week we rolled out the first batch of fishfinders/sonars. This time we finish up that category and stir in a couple of the best transducers.

Fishfinders/sonars

Koden KDS-5500BB

The new KDS-5500 black box sonar is a single-frequency (80kHz) version of the popular KDS-6000BB broadband sonar, designed to provide higher sensitivity and superior fish detection/tracking over longer ranges. The KDS-5500BB provides top-quality performance and fish detection at ranges out to 700 meters in deep offshore waters, ideal for targeting and tracking schools of tuna and other pelagic fish offshore. This 80kHz operation can also be very useful for finding schools of red snapper or seiners hunting for schools of sardine. With 5, 10, 15 and 20° scanning sector angle steps available, captains can use the KDS-5500BB to detect and track fast-moving schools of fish. The KDS-5500BB also comes in a stabilized version for rough-water applications and a short-stroke hoist version for vessels with limited space.

Lowrance ActiveTarget 2

ActiveTarget 2 is the newest update to the award-winning ActiveTarget live sonar that was unveiled in 2020 and quickly became a mainstay for the world’s best anglers and professionals of Major League Fishing. ActiveTarget 2 provides higher-resolution views of fish movement and structure and enables anglers to quickly recognize if lures and techniques are working in real time, allowing them to make adjustments to get fish to strike. It delivers a smoother and more consistent image across the entire range, with a full live-action picture in Forward, Down and Scout views. Additionally, HDS PRO allows for the use of two systems at the same time, giving even more views simultaneously with 180 View, Scout Wide View and Forward and Scout Split-Screen Views.

Onwa KFish-12

The KFish-12 is an advanced fishfinder. Featuring a 12.1-inch color TFT LCD display, it provides clear and detailed imaging. With 16 selectable echo colors and multiple range options, it offers versatile performance. The fishfinder supports a range shift of up to 1000 meters and zoom ranges of two, three, four and six times. It also includes a bottom lock expansion range for enhanced bottom detection. The KFish-12 supports high-frequency (200K) and low-frequency (50K) display modes, as well as a zoom display for precise target tracking. It is compatible with various transducers, including 1kW and 2kW options.

Transducers

Airmar B175MW

Airmar's new line of 1kW CHIRP-ready, medium-frequency, ultra-wide transducers feature an innovative ceramic array design that delivers up to 73° of ultra-wide beamwidth and performance down to 400m (1,300 feet), giving anglers a combination they’ve never had before. Available as low-profile, tilted-element, depth- and fast-response water-temperature transducers with bronze or stainless steel housings (B175MW or SS175MW), or as a transom mount (TM185MW), these new transducers deliver higher frequencies (than low) down to where deep water species roam.

Echonautics BT87H

The new Echonautics BT87H Transducer offers American design, Italian manufacturing, and compatibility with all major sounder and MFD brands. Available in 600W or 1kw output, this high-frequency CHIRP bronze flush-mount thru-hull minimizes drag and provides superior high-speed performance for today’s powerful center consoles and sportfishing yachts. Its powerful output, 130-210kHZ frequency range and narrow 8 to 13° beamwidth make this transducer excellent for pinpointing fish holding tight to reefs, wrecks, and other structure. This model is available in 0, 12, and 18° tilted-element versions to accommodate different mounting locations and hull styles. Available across North America exclusively through AvMap Satellite Navigation Inc.
